I’m Entitled To Porn, Right?
The other night as our group of warriors gathered and talked about the journey of purity and freedom, one of the men was sharing about how he had recently looked at porn.
As we talked more about it a theme emerged: he looked at it because he felt entitled to it.
He felt that he had earned the right to look at some porn because he had been “good” for several days, perhaps even a week. Looking at porn was his “reward.”
His thoughts are actually pretty common. Many men, even Christians, don’t think that a look at pornography now and then really matters, and if they are “good” — doing the things that they are supposed to do (whatever that is) — then they can take a look.
That belief is totally false, of course, and it reveals a stunning lack of understanding of the heart of God and the teaching of Jesus.
Some men also think that they are entitled to look at pornography simply because they are men.
Both mindsets develop when men are stuck in a small story. The small story is, simply, one that revolves around sexual satisfaction and personal pleasure at the expense of everything else.
It is one of the great lies the Enemy employs as a tactic: he convinces us that we are, in fact, entitled to it. Until we wage war against that deception, we will believe that we should be allowed to enjoy our porn, even if our community, our wives and our God tell us otherwise.
Pornography is not in anyone’s best interest. But unless the attitude of entitlement is crushed under the weight of reality, recovery will continue to be an uphill battle.
