The Porn Generation
In October, Nightline did a piece on the film Sexy Baby.
i haven’t seen the film, but it explores the problem of a generation growing up on internet porn. The piece on Nightline hit on some very important points.
Based on the Nightline report, Sexy Baby looks like one of those films you don’t really want to watch but you really should.
The overarching theme of the Nightline report is that porn culture has totally infected media and pop culture and social media is the platform upon which pre-teen boys and girls are participating in it.
The specific focus of the film is a young girl who admits that porn culture has infected her generation — with negative effects — but she still dresses provocatively and puts alluring pictures of herself on Facebook.
The Nightline reporter interviewed her parents, who seem to think that while their daughter’s activities aren’t “great,” they want her to be independent and empowered.
The report also talks to a former porn performer who says that porn has totally become mainstream. Maybe, now that a porn performer has said it, people will listen.
What we see in the report is the many layers of how porn infects a culture and a generation. And we see the confusion it causes for young women. While they know that porn is affecting them in negative ways, they don’t resist it. They look to take advantage of something that is clearly taking advantage of them.
The truth is: with porn, everybody loses. To add insult to injury, pornographers are getting rich by taking our money.
One Response to “The Porn Generation”
Urgh, and once again I can’t access something from America in Australia. I would be really interested in seeing that show. It’s right up my alley.
