Porn Hijacks Your Brain

One of the things i talked to the students about on Sunday was the fact that pornography hijacks your brain, particularly the developing brain of pre-teens and teens.
There are many studies and books on the topic of neuroplasticity, and not being a neuroscientist, i can’t speak exhaustively on it, but here is another article addressing the brain issues related to porn.
The article in the link mentions two doctors, Phil Zimbardo and Gary Wilson. Zimbardo gave a talk at TED recently that addressed an issue referred to as “the demise of guys.” Wilson, picking up on that theme, examines the effect of porn on the brains of young boys and young men.
According to Wilson, when young boys start viewing pornography, a pattern of behavior develops. Specifically,
…his brain wires itself to everything associated with porn such as: Being alone, constant clicking, voyeurism, shock and surprise. This conflicts with learning about real sex, which involves interaction with a real person, courtship, commitment, touching, being touched and emotional connection.
Wilson goes on to say
“Of all the activities on the Internet, porn has the most potential to be addictive,” said Wilson. “Everything in the porn user’s life is boring except porn.”
i can relate to that. When i was in my addiction, everything other than porn carried with it a heavy weight of boredom. i couldn’t wait to be alone with either porn or simply my pornographic thoughts. Those were the things that brought me excitement and made me feel alive.
As i told the students on Sunday, watching porn conditions you to sexually dissatisfied and disrupts your ability to engage in healthy relationships in general.
