Better Than Porn?
There was a time when i thought there was nothing better than porn. Truly.
i would never have said that out loud; i couldn’t have — after all i was Christian. But that’s what i thought.
More than a thought, though, it was a deep, unspoken conviction in my heart.
That’s the level of obsession and addiction i had reached.
Real sex? It’s OK, but not as good as porn.
As men who deal with this addiction, we must ask ourselves: “What’s better than porn?
Whereas once i had no answer for that, now i can actually say many things are better than porn. Real life. Authentic relationships. Freedom.
Pursuit of porn is always about a search for life. It’s like our thirsty souls are looking for any drink they can get.
We run to porn and lust and fantasy in an attempt to get a drink of water; something to slake our thirst. And our parched throats feel some relief, for a moment, but even as we indulge our addiction we know that what we are drinking is not going to last.
In the last days of my porn addiction, i experienced the failure of my addiction to give me anything, even in the midst of acting out.
Our hearts need to be set free from porn and to see that the drink of water God has for us — like the drink Jesus gave the woman at the well in John 4 — truly satisfies. He has the ability to bring us life.
He is better than porn.
