Save The Whales, Lose The Porn

There are millions of men who never think about the plight of whales in the ocean who will pretend to care about them for the month of February.
That’s because adult web site Pornhub has announced that for every 2,000 videos watched on its site during February, the owners of the site will donate 1 cent to MCS, a charity dedicated to saving whales.
At that rate, 200,000 videos will need to be viewed to raise just $1. That’s a lot of videos, but given that Pornhub boasts 60 million visitors per day, raising a few dollars to save the whales will be, well, a drop in the ocean.
However, according to news stories in The Guardian and the Washington Post, Pornhub wants to raise more than just a few dollars. The target is $27,000.
If my math is correct, visitors to Pornhub will have to watch 5.4 billion videos to raise $27,000.
That’s an insane amount of porn to watch. And saving the whales is really not worth the destruction that 5.4 billion porn videos will do to the hearts and souls of the men (and perhaps women) who view them.
Saving the whales is a noble cause, but we shouldn’t destroy ourselves in the process.
Of course, linking porn viewership to a worthy cause such as saving the whales is a clever way to attempt to legitimize porn consumption. But no matter how much money is raised, porn consumption isn’t legitimate.
If you really care about saving the whales, you certainly don’t need to watch any porn to do it. In fact, we should save the whales and lose the porn.
That would actually be a win-win.
