Staying In The Fight

i remember what my counselor told me about a month after i had been exposed to my wife as being a pornography addict.

He said: “You’re scared right now, and that’s keeping you from going back to it, but the real test will be what happens 6 months from now; and then 6 months after that.”

When he said that, a chill ran through my entire body. Sure, it was 6am on a Thursday in November, which means i was already a little chilly; but the harrowing fact was: i might not make it.

Staying in the fight is crucial. It is a challenge that requires all of our strength and the fellowship of a committed brotherhood. Many men don’t have the strength or the broherhood.

It’s ironic. Not one man would walk alone into an actual physical confrontation of any serious consequence.  We would always bring back up.

But most men walk straight into the spiritual battle of conquering pornography, lust and masturbation completely alone. And yet, the unseen battle is against the fiercest enemy we have: Satan himself.

The Evil One is bent on our destruction (I Peter 5:-9). We act so nonchalant about it.

God the Father arms us and makes us more than conquerors (Romans 8:31-37). But that does not mean at all that the battle is somehow not real. Nor does it mean that it’s all a foregone conclusion and we have no role to play.

As I Peter 5:9 says:

But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world (NASB).

The point here is simple: we must resist knowing that our brothers are experiencing the same thing. There is a need for the brothers to lend their strength to one another. We dare not fight alone.

Paul gives us this charge in I Timothy 6:11-14:

But you, man of God, flee from all this (greed & evil), and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ…
