Porn Blocking Blocked In UK

One of the more contentious issues in the UK lately has been whether ISPs should, by default, block porn access.

This story argues against default blocking.

While it’s true that any blocking system can give people a false sense of security, filtering programs still have value.  Some blocking is better than none. And while there are always those who say that blocking programs “aren’t effective,” we know for sure that they are more effective than simply leaving the internet open to all children to access all forms of pornography.

But the strong resistance in UK culture, as in US culture, remains:  we must have our porn.

Porn should be treated as though it were tobacco. Then restrictions would be easy to put into place. But thus far, the world at large remains deaf to the reality that there are social costs to pornography.
